64% Of Americans Have Never Checked To See If They Were Affected By A Data Breach
15+ hour, 19+ min ago (1590+ words) Computer Security Day on November 30th reminds us to protect our computers. Every day, computers become faster and more advanced. Protecting the resources, tools, and information on them protects the people who use them, too. 1988 " Computer Security Day began around the time computers were becoming commonplace, though they were not yet ubiquitous in homes. 1988 " On November 2, 1988, Cornell University researchers uncovered an unknown virus lurking in their computer systems. Within four hours of discovery, the "Morris worm" virus infected several other university systems and the ARPANET, an early version of today's internet. 2003 " The Computer Emergency Response Team (CERT) and the U.S. Department of Homeland Security work together to create the National Cyber Awareness System. 2013 " Cryptolocker released a form of malware that could not be removed without the victim paying a "ransom" which may or may not restore any lost files. 2013 " 3 billion Yahoo accounts…...
Retailers Shift Tactics: AI & In-Store Perks Crowned Winners as Online Orders Wobble on Black Friday 2025
15+ hour, 22+ min ago (300+ words) The annual Black Friday retail marathon looked familiar on the surface but played out differently behind the scenes in 2025. According to industry publication Retail Dive, online discount levels held largely steady compared with last year, but the drivers of success have shifted. While U.S. e-commerce sales reached about $11.8 billion on Black Friday " a 9.1 % year-over-year increase per Adobe Analytics " and were estimated at $18 billion via Salesforce data (a 3 % rise) the underlying metrics raised more alarms than celebration. "Notably, online order volume dropped 1 % and units per transaction were down 2 % as average selling prices rose 7 %. In the face of inflationary pressures and eroding consumer sentiment, some retailers pulled ahead by leaning into newer levers. For example: Circana's Chief Retail Advisor, Marshal Cohen, told Retail Dive: "The Black Friday that we have come to know and love has changed." "And: "Build it and they will…...
Shopping Online? The Product Ratings Are (Probably) Fooling You
15+ hour, 24+ min ago (421+ words) Looks can be deceiving, and that's especially true with those ubiquitous ratings that accompany countless products online and in stores. The five-star rating system, for instance, is commonplace on Google and Amazon. Millions of shoppers rely on it every day to help them decide what to buy, and where. However, just-released research shows that the way the ratings are displayed " whether as a star or a numeral " can make a huge difference in how people interpret them. According to a'new study'from'Cornell University, it all boils down to how our brains process visual stars versus numbers. Take a rating of 3.5, for example. In star form? Shoppers are far more likely to interpret it as four stars than its true rating. "Where there are three full stars and one half star " our brain automatically completes this half picture," Deepak Sirwani, a marketing…...
Lawmakers Approve Flawed Report Claiming Compliance, While $6 Billion in Contracts Remain Hidden
15+ hour, 25+ min ago (259+ words) In a rapid, question-free session on November 3, the Joint Legislative Auditing Committee (JLAC) rubber-stamped a staff report claiming that the requirements of the Transparency Florida Act have been met " even though the watchdog news organization Florida Bulldog found more than $6 billion in emergency contracts issued by the governor's office that were not posted publicly, as the law mandates. Co-chairs Chase Tramont, R-Port Orange, and Jason Brodeur, R-Lake Mary, led the meeting, during which the committee approved the report by voice vote in less than a minute and without discussion. The report included no recommendations to improve state transparency " despite the glaring absence of documentation for hundreds of contracts. Florida Bulldog's analysis revealed that more than 700 contracts were missing from the public database maintained by the state's Florida Accountability Contract Tracking System (FACTS), in violation of the law's requirement that agencies…...
Judge: Private School Accepted State Vouchers For Students 130 Miles Away
15+ hour, 25+ min ago (752+ words) by Jay Waagmeester, Florida Phoenix A private school in Brooksville should be barred from access to state school vouchers after its operator admitted it wasn't educating students the state paid it to teach, an administrative judge recommended Wednesday. The episode follows release of a state audit into a state budget strain caused by what lawmakers agree are lax accounting practices in the school choice program. Little Wings of Prayer, a daycare and private school in Hernando County since 2018, is subject of an investigation opened in 2024 into a mass transfer of students (and their state-funded scholarships) from a separate school two hours away, according to administrative law Judge Robert Telfer III. "It would be difficult for the undersigned to discern a more obvious and brazen fraudulent scheme than the one undertaken by [Little Wings of Prayer operator] Ms. [Crystal] Harris. This violation,…...

15+ hour, 36+ min ago (204+ words) A new study reveals Florida has the fourth-worst health insurance crisis for women in the U.S. The research by Nevada-based personal injury lawyers H&P Law analyzed uninsured rates among women across all 50 states between 2021 and 2023. Scores for the average number of uninsured women per 1,000 women were calculated to identify the states where women are most at risk if they get sick. Florida ranks fourth with an average of 81.4 uninsured women per 1,000 women, 57% higher than the national average of 51.7. The Sunshine State recorded 989,900 uninsured women in 2021, its highest during the period, dropping to 880,600 in 2023. Looking at the study, a spokesperson from H&P Law commented, "The findings reveal a troubling reality regarding women in states like Florida, who face significant barriers to accessing health care. "Without adequate insurance, preventive care is often delayed or skipped entirely, leading to higher rates of…...
